History
A century of tradition and technology
We've grown from a small agricultural produce dealer to the company behind the successful Patasnella brand, combining engineering innovation with environmental sustainability
The early days
Our company was founded in Budrio, near Bologna, in 1926, when Mario Pizzoli started a small potato trading business. Soon after World War II, his son Ennio invested in new equipment and workers to select and package the potatoes. Bags of Pizzoli potatoes appeared on the shelves of the first supermarkets.
A new insight: frozen potatoes
In the late 1960s, Ennio and his brother Irnerio looked to the future by setting up a new production line for frozen fries. In the following twenty years, their increasing investments in technology and research contributed to widen the company's product portfolio, making it Italy's biggest potato company. Pizzoli fries made their debut in restaurants and supermarkets.
Patasnella
A successful case history
Patasnella
The right product at the right time: in 1998, an R&D project supported by effective marketing made a success of Patasnella, Italy's first oven fries.
An international, hi-tech and sustainable company
At the turn of the new millennium, the company heavily invested in new production lines. Pizzoli was consequently able to expand to foreign markets, promoting all the value of made in Italy products. In 2010, confirming the tangible and consistent commitment to sustainability, the company built a new biomass plant to generate renewable energy using biogas from potato processing waste.
In 2017, Pizzoli created a new, highly automated, low-impact logistics plant in San Pietro in Casale, in the Bologna area. This cold warehouse uses advanced engineering technology and marked the first step towards a new production centre, the biggest one in Southern Europe.
The new production plant
In 2023 was inaugurated the new production plant in San Pietro in Casale (BO), the largest in southern Europe.
An important investment for the growth of the Company and for the national potato industry.
The plant, born from a project of industrial reconversion of the site of a former sugar factory, embodies the principles of sustainability and circularity and it is equipped with the most advanced technologies.
